  • and much more

What's behind rovian thinking?

bernardpliers over at DailyKos takes a look at why the GOP has been so successful in steering the political debate in America.  The discussion that follows his posting is a good one and should be mandatory reading for all democratic campaign officials.

This is a prime example of where truth doesn't matter.  The human brain simply recognizes if it is heard a story before, not necessarily if it was a true or false story.  Anyone who has taken Logic 101 in college can probably relate to this discrepency.

Blogs work, here is proof

I recently posted about how Exxon Mobil was paying large amounts of cash for articles, press releases, fake news segments etc, that sought to confuse the public when it came to global warming.  Enough other people joined me in posting about it that now the giant has given up on it's goal of confusing Americans.  Of course this means that they have a backup strategy in place already but it does feel good knowing that occasionaly people read what we bloggers have to say.

The Pump Handle has the scoop.

Thanks to all the scientists and public watchdog groups that brought the problem to light in the first place.  To every driver out there, how do you feel about a company using the profits sucked from your pockets being used to lie to you?  Maybe it's made you angry, angry enough to boycott.  Maybe you know of another company endangering people's lives and wellbeing for a quick buck, if so you are encouraged to blow the whistle.

Set up a blog on freeflux or send me an email and I'll post items for you.

Peace.

Wash Post columnist plays race card with HPV vaccine, drops the deck

Whigsboy vs Milloy:

Milloy begins the column by talking about a parent with a young girl heading into the sixth grade and she’ll need the usual vaccinations. This year, though, something’s different:

But this time, there's another disease on the list, one that the D.C. government is strongly urging your daughter be immunized against: the human papillomavirus, or HPV, which is sexually transmitted. After all, your daughter is 11 and probably black, so the assumption is she'll be having unprotected sex in no time -- but don't take offense.

Researching Our Way to Prosperity

Merrill Goozner takes a look at Eliot Spitzer's decision to push a Stem Cell Research Bill through in New York:

Stem cell research is promising, and it shouldn't be impeded by a bunch of anti-science right-to-lifers with God and the president on their side. But like any strain of research, the likelihood of a major medical breakthrough coming from stem cells is probably not that much greater than gene therapy, the human genome project, the war on cancer or any of the multi-billion-dollar medical research programs that came before it. A lot of knowledge and a few good things will come out of stem cell research, but will it make those with severed spines stand up and walk? Call me irreligious, but I'm skeptical.

Free webhosts that aren't worth your time

I took some time, a lot of time, trying to set up a similar news delivery service on another hosting platform.  While the host claimed that they were an ad free host, they had a script that would pop up whenever their was a broken link on your site, guess what this script ran...advertising....and lots of it.  No biggy?  Well the script was interfering with the installations which lead to a lot of wasted time and wasted server space.

The server failed on 2 occasions leaving me to wonder if my work had been erased by the server.  No technical assistance or even an FAQ was available.  That's a lot of strikes against it, oh and the name of said host?

ifastnet.com

I won't link to them because they are that bad.  Thanks for wasting my time and the time of hundreds of other webmasters guys.  You really shouldn't have.  There are many other worthless hosts out there and I'll add some more as they come to mind.

Joining BlogShares and Things We Found

We took some time to set up an account over at BlogShares.com and in so doing found some wonderful blogs that deserve attention.  We'll be featuring some of those blogs in future articles but for now we are linking to them on the left hand side of our page.

If you haven't played BlogShares it's a lot of fun and you can get pretty creative with it.  I'm still learning but have already climbed to the top of the newbie charts in just one day!

If only the money were real...

The rest of the site has been checked for SNAFU's and I realized that posting newsfeeds within a blogpost confuses most feedreaders.  So from now on any javascript newsfeeds must be placed on there own web page and linked to.

I also tried my hand at a new CutePHP application for news and newsfeeds and so far it seems very easy to run.  I'll link to it when it is ready for new members.

How to display eight news feeds on one page

I wanted to display 8 alternative news sources on the same page. I also wanted to include 5 stories from each source and only the titles of each story to be listed.

So, I went to FeedBucket and entered the newsfeeds then copied the coding they provide at the bottom of the page that displays a newsfeed on an HTML page. I copied the coding from there to a new web page and placed each newsfeed in one of eight table cells.

You can see the result here

Basically it is a simple way to make your own newsreader, one that doesn't have unwanted ads or information tracking connected with it.  Go to the link and select view source, select all the information and copy it to your own website.  Just replace the feeds with your own favorites.

Sustainability, energy independence and agricultural policy

The Ergosphere has some thoughts on energy, hurricanes, long term goals, self-sustaining systems, transportation, incentive structures and a lot more.  Anyone dealing with economic and energy policy should be required to read this and respond.  Hey, it even includes charts and graphs for those policy makers who find reading to be a bore.
