McKinney , Smith, Bush, and Impeachment

Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney has introduced articles of impeachment [ http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/downloads/mckinneyarticles.pdf ]against George Bush, Dick Cheney, and Condoleezza Rice. In doing so, she alone has spoken for the 51 percent of Americans who Newsweek says want Bush impeached. A considerably higher percentage of Americans would, if asked, almost certainly acknowledge that the abuses with which McKinney charges Bush et al. have, in fact, been committed by them and are impeachable offenses. That is to say, there are those who recognize the grounds for impeachment but don't want to see them pursued. There are even those who want impeachment pursued but wish it were not being pursued by McKinney

Paid Sick Days Conference Call

Joel Barkin from Progressive States invites legislators and interested parties to join in a new series of conference calls on "key policies progressives are promoting in the states. The first call will detail efforts in states around the country to guarantee all workers Paid Sick Days, a basic job benefit denied to half of all employees."

Included already in the mix are ACORN, MomsRising, the National Partnership for Women & Families, and State Legislative Leaders.

Many Events Already Planned, More in the Works, for Sunday, December 10th

December 10th is Human Rights Day, and this year we're making it Human Rights and Impeachment Day. Here's our slogan: "Putting Impeachment on the Table."

This is a chance to get organized locally and learn what's needed to lobby the new Congress for the investigations and impeachment hearings that will restore the rule of law to America.

You can sign up to attend a town hall forum, rally, vigil, training session, or house party in your area.

Or create a new event and post it online for others to sign up and attend.

FCC media ownership hearing on Nov 30 in Seattle

The FCC is having a series of media ownership discussions all over the country, basically looking for an excuse to allow even more consolidation of ownership groups. This is your chance to stop that and to encourage more independent voices in your local news coverage, not less.

You may want to do a little research on the issue and bring some of your work with you to submit or offer up to the discussion. You know the corporate world has their interests already covered, so who will cover your interests?

The FCC's media ownership regulations have been under attack by powerful media corporations and free-market ideologues at least since the Reagan administration, and took a serious hit when the 1996 Telecommunications Act eliminated caps on the number of radio stations a single company could own nationwide. This rule change paved the way for broadcasting empires like Clear Channel, which owns more than 1250 US radio stations, and the concurrent decimation of local ownership and minority ownership.

Public Hearing on the Future of Media

Tuesday night is your chance to tell Washington policymakers how well the media are serving your community.

Please join Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-N.Y.) and Northeast Citizens for Responsible Media in Hyde Park for a public forum on media ownership with Federal Communications Commissioner Michael Copps.

Now that the FCC is again considering sweeping changes to the nation's media ownership rules, it's critical for you to make your voice heard.

This hearing -- which is free and open to the public -- is a rare chance to participate directly in creating media policies that serve the public interest. The event will feature an open microphone session for you to offer testimony on media issues.

There will also be a series of panel discussions on how media concentration affects local news and information. Along with Congressman Hinchey and Comissioner Copps, panel participants will include Congressman-elect John Hall (D-NY 19 Dist); Rev. Willis Freeman, Kingston NAACP; Dr. Roberto Calderin, Latinos Unidos; and Julie McQuain, president, JPMR Associates.
