Larry Kissell for Congress in 2008

Larry Kissell took the bold move of announcing his candidacy for Congress in 2008 today.  Larry lost by just a few votes this year and many of us encouraged him to run again and work with the Democrats in the mean time.

Hearings on Bush's Crimes Will Unite Nation

By David Swanson

An astonishing 44 percent of Americans do not want President Bush impeached (Newsweek), 36 percent approve of the job he's doing (AP-Ipsos), 33 percent support the Iraq War (CNN). What, you may ask, is the matter with these people? Well, primarily this: they get their news by watching television and occasionally glancing at a magazine or newspaper. They don't know the things you know if you listen to progressive radio or search out news on the internet or read the ends of articles that begin on page 18.

Bodies Pile Up While Bush Clings to Rhetoric

The Daily Telegraph has yet another article about dead bodies piling up in the morgues in Iraq where we find out that 58 people were killed overnight and another mass grave was found north of Baghdad.

And what does Mr. Bush have to say about the leader, Mr. Maliki, over there?

"He's the right guy for Iraq. We're going to help him, and it is in our interest to help him, for the sake of peace. He is a strong leader and wants a free and democratic Iraq to succeed," Mr Bush told a joint news conference.

Closer to Home by David Swanson

By David Swanson

I did something worse than St. Augustine did when I was a kid. I must confess I broke into a house on the other side of town, and I did it just because it was such an ugly beat-down house that needed work so badly. Well, that and I kind of wanted to move out of my parents

When is a Corporation Like a Freed Slave?

Giant corporations are mentioned nowhere in the Constitution, yet a long-standing legal precedent, which views them as "persons," gives them the same rights enjoyed by citizens. One sludge hauler, for example, used the 14th Amendment's "equal protection" clause to sue a Pennsylvania town that passed an anti-sludge ordinance.  This principle of "corporate personhood," writes Barry Yeoman in the Nov/Dec issue of Mother Jones, has allowed businesses to routinely beat back a range of regulations. But Pennsylvania's Licking Township is challenging that. In its campaign to restrict the spreading of toxics-laden sewage on local fields, it has decreed that "Corporations shall not be considered to be 'persons' protected by the Constitution of the United States." This curious measure is the brainchild of Thomas Linzey, a lawyer who is fighting an uphill battle against the principle of corporate personhood.

A message from John Edwards to George Bush

Since I last wrote to you in August about the genocide in Darfur, the conflict has only intensified. Since then, more children have been orphaned, more women and girls have been raped, and more acres of farmland have been destroyed.
